An evening with Lucian Freud

posted 18.06.2008

Last night I shook myself free of post-it notes and press releases, put on a pair of heels and made my way to a party. And not just any party. This was the private view of Lucian Freud’s ‘Naked Portrait with Reflection’, hosted by Christies. Now art parties are something of a departure for me, as I generally spend more time frequenting fashion dos, but there were definite similarities. There was lots and lots of free champagne, a very good thing of course. There was a healthy smattering of celebrities; we spotted Marion Cotillard, Roland Mouret, Bella Freud and Jemma Kidd. (Somehow, to my great disappointment, I missed seeing Joan Collins - too busy trying to snag the mini-burgers probably.) And, naturally there was a celebrity DJ in the form of cool kid du jour Alice Dellal, complete with an entourage of hot boys.

Style mavens who think nothing of spending £1000 on a bag were replaced by those who have enough spare cash to splash out a selection of millions on a painting. The work on display has a not so credit-crunch friendly price tag of £10,000,000 - £15,000,000. That’s a lot of zeros. Lucian Freud himself of course put in an appearance (no sign of his most famous of subjects, Kate Moss). I managed to resist the urge to run up to him shouting ‘paint, me, paint me!’ and contented myself with some fairly uncool pointing and staring with my friend.
