How amazing was Chanel couture yesterday?

Despite the spectacular tailoring, new cocoon dresses and tubular lines and those blunt fringed bobs for me the stand out look has to be this one.

Is Daphne Guinness morphing in to Karl Lagerfeld? We think so…

Where have all the bargains gone?

posted 1.07.2008

The sales are on, and whilst I would normally be manically searching for bargains and melting my credit card, I am not happy. I can’t find anything to buy.

I almost found the perfect pair of black patent, sling back court shoes by Miu Miu at Selfridges for just £100!!!! I wanted to wear them now with ankle length trousers and with my power dressing LBD’s come Septemeber, but they were just a tad too tight in the 40. Olga (names have been changed to protect the incompetent) the strangest sales assistant I have ever come across thought I was slightly mental asking if she could just see if somehow she thought there might be a 40 1/2 out the back that hadn’t been put out yet.

I also almost found the perfect blazer come tuxedo in Paul Smith for just £150 but it was too tight, and all the Vanessa Bruno left in Selfridges has definitely been swept along the floor at least twice…In fact the only things I have found to covet this week is an oversize sequined sweater in Jaeger - not on sale, and an Alexander Wang jacket also not on sale…

Ah well, looks my credit card might be taking a hit after all…

If you only do one thing this weekend it has to be visit the Barbican to see The House of Viktor & Rolf. The entire ELLE team had a wowzers moment when we got a sneak peak on Tuesday afternoon, ahead of our celeb packed private view on Tuesday night. As dedicated fans you’ll have seen our video of the party already on ELLE TV (what? you haven’t? click now!!!) and I can assure you Roisin Murphy really was moved to tears when she first saw the huge dolls house which is the centre piece of the whole exhibit.

As I have already managed to marvel at the House of Viktor & Rolf I’m going shopping! The summer sales have started. (Yes I know summer has not actually started…but that doesn’t matter - I’m going to start stocking up for winter now.) I’ll mostly be looking out for interesting things in black -as that will be my uniform come September.

Anything from good quality black sweaters to any and every LBD I can get my hands are top of my list but I’m also on the look out for another great fitting black blazer or tuxedo (these will, without a doubt remain everywhere through to next season so you might as well look for a bargain now) and some tapered trousers. I still haven’t managed to find a pair that I really love - but now that the Matches sale has stared I’ve got my fingers crossed.

I’ll also be looking out for anything checked or plaid and anything sequined - two big trends for next seasons that I don’t think I’ll invest heavily in so will be nice to find something bargainous now!

And the best bit - my boyfriend can absolutely not complain about any of this shopping as I sacrificed a whole day (and by day I mean a whole day of shopping of course!) on our trip to Milan last weekend… to visit a football stadium. Ahh 1-0 to me!

Credit card please…..

Wish I was there…

When this picture came through to the Elleuk.com picture desk this morning, I nearly cried. Could this have been the most sensational fashion moment of the month, maybe even the year so far.

Mrs Beckham, Marc Jacobs Naomi and US Vogue’s Andre Leon Tally at the CFDA Awards last night in Manhattan.

Love, love love, Andre’s pink full length croc coat, turban with jewelled lizard brooch and silver clutch nearly as much as Naomi’s vintage YSL!

Oh to have been a fly on the wall at their table…

Wallace and Osman

posted 23.05.2008

Usually I spend a lot of time persuading people that the life of a fashion editor is not as glamorous as it sounds and my time at work is not actually spent on an endless merry-go-round of lunches, spa trips and jetting off to Milan. But yesterday I did get to spend one and half blissfull hours (Dear Ed. Thank you for letting me leave my desk) lunching at The Wallace Collection in London with Brit designer Osman Yousefzada. We sat in the conservatory and discussed everything from the Middle East crisis to Marc Jacobs over cod (me) and lamb chops (him!). As the sun streamed in through the glass roof of the restaurant and we tried to identify which of the ladies who were lunching had had Botox I thought…wouldn’t it be nice if everyday could be like this.

And that blissed out feeling last about 30 more seconds before I found myself on all fours in the road on Oxford Street with a bus coming towards me.

The flap of my flared wide leg jeans got caught under my too high for work wedges and I went flying, in front of on coming traffic.

I now have two knee’s blacker than next season’s YSL…

Met Stars

posted 9.05.2008

The Costume Institute Met Ball is one of my favourite fashion events of the year. Possibly THE favourite. And why? Because it’s the designers who are the stars here…and their celebrity guests mere mannequins, so Marc, Diane, Donatella et all go all out to wow with the dresses they give the girls they invite!

There were, of course some howlers that will certainly have a few otherwise sartorially successful stars featuring on worst dressed lists around thee globe come Christmas, but the least said about those the better…

Best to concentrate on the girls who got it right! And it was those who embraced the night’s Superhero theme that got my vote.

Christina Ricci wins best dressed by a mile…in a see-through, pink chiffon, Givenchy number that revealed a red Wonder Woman body underneath. I wish I could wear a red leotard under all my clothes for work everyday.

Christina Ricci

Amber Valletta was another fashion superstar of the night in winged Versace…Amber Valleta

This is the perfect on-trend, on theme, makes-one-look-like-a goddess-even-though-you-have-sort-of-dressed up dress. Take note if you have a fancy dress/ themed party to go to this year - this is the way to do it! Step away from the naughty nurse costume now!

I wouldn’t have guessed that even the most talented designers could have some up with such stunningly on trend ways to channel the Superhero theme (and to be quite honest some didn’t!) but these two looks really worked.

It’s just been announced that next year the Met Ball will honour Marc (God) Jacobs. Yes he of the camel toe fancy dress costume. I.can’t.wait. to see what the theme is for that one!

If you want to get ahead…get a head band?

Mary Kate Olsen

When this pic of Mary Kate arrived at the ELLE picture desk this morning, everyone had something to say about it. Insane to sublimely ridiculous was the general concensus.

I have to say though - I love, love, love it. Dressed up in Granny’s old vintage, two sizes to big, couture hobo is not a new look for MK or her partner in fashion crime, twin sister Ashley. We’re all used to seeing the waifs Olsen in floor skimming (read floor cleaning) dresses and a doe eyed look that says - ‘Oh I just threw this on…’

But it’s the head band on this look that really has people talking. Part Queen Amidala (That’s Natalie Portman in Star Wars) part Jane Fonda circa 1984 I think MK probably found inspiration for it at Marc Jacobs a/w08 show…which was a riot of 1980s references, including the giant head band.

Though the general vibe of Marc’s retro look back in time was something we all suspected might infiltrate anywhere from the high street to the red carpet come next season, no one at the show thought we’d see that headband anywhere…but then maybe we hadn’t reckoned on MK…Im not sure even Marc did…

Chloe does it again…

Boyfriend is taking some big work exam on Tuesday, so this weekend I’m all alone, catching up on gossip, Gossip Girl and anything everything on Perez.

And can I just say, on the subject of Gossip Girl, I don’t get it. The fashion is not amazing! And I really want it to be. Maybe it will get better? Remember those early episodes of Sex and the City when all Miranda wore was pinstripe suits and ties, and Carrie wore the same thing for more than (shock horror) half an episode! Or even the O.C before the designers started to throw everything at Micha and co too…well maybe things will pick up.

At the moment though I ‘m just not convinced that grey, over-the-knee suede boots teamed with a micro, mini school skirt would ever happen, anywhere…ditto the daughter of a chic Upper East Side dwelling, fashion designer wearing what can only be described as an air stewardess’ uniform from 1984 (Blair this week - that’s the brunette by the way!)
Luckily everything ELLE girl Chloe S seems to do turns to cool. Her latest collaboration - with Uniqlo can be seen everywhere right now she’s fronting their new collection of too cute charity tees perfect for this bonkers weather, I’m getting ‘Leave me alone’ and ‘Sorry I’m late’ for the boyf!

What next Marc Jacobs?

posted 4.04.2008

He went to his own fancy dress party dressed as a camel toe and stuck Posh upside down in a carrier bag for his latest ad campaign, not to mention keeping the fashion world waiting on a regular basis for his shows to start and then sending his collection (for spring/summer 08) out in reverse order, starting with his finale bow first!

Welcome to the topsy turvey world of Marc Jacobs - which this season includes court shoes with heels stuck on backwards and underwear as outerwear.

I just didn’t think things could get any more bonkers until I spied this pic of Marc attending a Louis Vuitton event (he is Creative Director of the label) in Brooklyn this week.

Emerald green suit - check. Gold trainners -check. Clutch bag - check. Yes you read it right, clutch bag!

Ahh Marc, what will you come out with next…?

Packing again… We’re off to the Cotswolds for the Easter Weekend.

One weather man says it’s going to snow while another says sunshine is on the way – aggh!

What to take? The boyfriend will definitely not be impressed if I turn up with too much luggage. Especially as he’s carrying it all!

I’d love to think I could just turn up in my jeans and parka, but you never know, we could quite easily bump in to Kate Moss in the local pub…her house is in the Cotswolds isn’t it?!

Maybe she’ll stay in Paris for the long weekend. She’s been in the City of Lights with boyf Jamie Hince and his band the Kills all week.

She really is morphing nicely into the third member of the group if these pics are anything to go by…

Love, love , love Kate’s new anti it bag statement. All week she’s been carrying a battered old canvas knapsack everywhere she goes.

Very eco – anti consumer…

Bravo Kate!
